Fire and Emergency Services (Domestic Smoke Alarms) Amendment Bill 2016
From January 1, 2017 only Photoelectric smoke alarms can be installed in new buildings or as replacements in existing buildings.
- All bedrooms and hallways are to have interconnected smoke alarms.
- Rental properties must comply to the new code when there is a new tenant or a new lease for an existing tenant. This also applies when there are renovations or sale of the property. All rental properties must comply with the new code within 5 years from 1st January 2017.
- New houses or significant renovations or sale of existing houses must comply to the new code from January 1, 2017. All private houses must comply to the new code within 10 years from January 1, 2017.
